Analogous & Monochromatic Self Portrait

Analogous Self Portrait Lesson:

Objective: Students will learn that Analogous color schemes are used when creating art using shades of colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. ex blue & purple, blue & green, yellow & green, yellow & orange, red & orange, red & purple

Students will then create their own self portrait using just two colors

Day 1  – 45 min

  1. Introduce students to the color wheel.
  2. Explain Analogous to students.
  3. Explain why they will only have two color at their tables to use – talk about how markers make a darker mark and crayons and colored pencils make a lighter mark.
  4. Go over the elements of a face and basic facial proportions .
  5. Explain that the background must be filled with a pattern. No white paper showing.
  6. Have students choose a color and go to that table.
  7. Pass out index cards and let the students work.
  8. Stop them in the last 5 minutes to clean up and collect work.
  9. Clip projects together using closepin with teachers name.

Day 2 –   45 min

Add a bin to each table with an analogous color – make sure it is a color that is next to it on the color wheel

  1. Review with students what they learned last time
  2. Explain that they must return to the table with the same color that they used last time – reinforce that they are using just those two colors
  3. Pass out projects and let students start working
  4. If they think they are finished check for a few things:
    1. Make sure the eyes, nose and mouth are visible – let students use a black marker if the facial features got ‘lost’
    2. if face is still white tell students to shade the face to give the skin a color. tell them to use a colored pencil to do this so the facial features don’t get lost
    3. background must be filled with a pattern. No white paper showing
  5. When complete collect their portrait and add it to the teacher clothes pin
  6. Early finishers will color in a flyer for an art festival coming up using a box of crayons. Both will be found on the front table by the whiteboard.
    1. Remind students not to mix the crayon box crayons with what is in their buckets. All the crayons must be returned to the boxes.
  7. Stop the students with 5 minutes left to clean up and collect portraits.
    1. Choose 2 students to collect projects while everyone else tidies their tables.
    2. Choose 1 or 2 students to collect crayon boxes to return to yellow basket in front of classroom.
    3. When a table is quiet and clean they may be dismissed to line up.
